Her research inspired Andrea Bowers in the creation of some of the works in the exhibition. On Friday, November 11, at 6 pm at the GAM in Milan, Chiricosta starts from the contents of her own book Un Altro Genere di Forza (Another Kind of Strength) to explore the possibility of other forms in which strength may be conceived and expressed, thus surpassing the nexus between “gender” and “strength.”

Alessandra Chiricosta will also call on the public to take part in a workshop to be held the following day, Saturday, November 12, at the Milan headquarters of the National Women’s Union: a performative lesson in feminist combatant self-awareness, the same as that documented in Andrea Bowers’ video In the Ballroom – Overcoming the Myth of Masculine Force (2022), produced on the occasion of the exhibition. In the workshop, participants will experience how the “weakness” of feminine and feminized bodies is not a natural element but the result of cultural conditioning, and how “strength” can be not only a matter of overpowerment but also a balanced blend of caring and fighting, assertiveness and empathy.

The program continues on Thursday, November 24, with a talk by philosopher and anthropologist Federica Riva Ecofemminismo in movimento (Ecofeminsm in movement) dedicated to ecofeminism, its origins and transformations, and closes on Thursday, December 1, with a meeting Le carte delle donne (The Women’s Papers), moderated by historian Maria Canella, featuring representatives from the various archives featured in the exhibition: the Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Foundation, the Kuliscioff Foundation, and the Unione Femminile Nazionale. Taking its cue from the way Bowers relates to archive materials and incorporates them in her own work, the conference proposes a more general reflection on how to update the approach to historical sources with a view to proposing new readings of gender history. Both meetings will be held at the GAM in Milan.

All Public Program events are accessible free of charge with pre-booking required.

Moving in Space without Asking Permission is the first exhibition in an Italian institution by American artist and activist Andrea Bowers, and offers an immersive experience within her work and her commitment to the struggle for gender equality and women’s emancipation, through research that combines aesthetic practices and political engagement.

Furla Series is the project that since 2017 has engaged Fondazione Furla in the creation of exhibitions in collaboration with major Italian art institutions, with an all-female program designed to valorize and give visibility to women’s fundamental contribution to contemporary culture.

The Public Program of the Andrea Bowers exhibition is made possible with the support of Deloitte.

Partner

COMPLETE CALENDAR

PUBLIC PROGRAM

Friday November 11, 6 pm

UN ALTRO GENERE DI FORZA | ANOTHER KIND OF STRENGTH

Talk by Alessandra Chiricosta

Thursday November 24, 6 pm

ECOFEMMINISMO IN MOVIMENTO | ECOFEMINISM IN MOVEMENT

Talk by Federica Riva

Thursday December 1, 6 pm

LE CARTE DELLE DONNE | THE WOMEN’S PAPERS

New scenarios of the history of gender, from art to archives and public history

GAM – Galleria d’Arte Moderna

Via Palestro 16, Milan

Admission free, subject to availability.

Pre-booking required Fondazione Furla | Eventbrite

Saturday November 12, 10 am – 1 pm

LEZIONE PERFORMATIVA DI AUTOCOSCIENZA COMBATTENTE FEMMINISTA | PERFORMANCE LESSON IN FEMINIST COMBATANT SELF-AWARENESS

Workshop with Alessandra Chiricosta

Unione Femminile Nazionale

Corso di Porta Nuova 32, Milan

Admission free, subject to availability.

Pre-booking required: info@fondazionefurla.org

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND GUIDED TOURS

STEREOTYPES

Guided tour for adults

Saturday, November 5, 3.30 pm – duration 90’
Sunday, November 13, 3.30 pm – duration 90’

Sunday, November 27, 3.30 pm – duration 90’

Sunday, December 18, 3.30 pm – duration 90’

LA FORZA DEI GESTI (THE STRENGTH OF GESTURES)

Visit + activity for families with children aged 8–11

Sunday, November 13, 10.30 am – duration 90’

Sunday, December 18, 10.30 am – duration 90’

LA FORZA DELLE PAROLE (THE STRENGTH OF WORDS)

Visit + creative workshop families with children aged 8–11

Saturday, November 5, 3.30 pm – duration 90’

Sunday, November 27, 3.30 pm – duration 90’

Free activities in Italian included in the cost of admission.

Pre-booking required: admaiora.education

Per la prima volta in Italia: l’ artista e attivista americana Andrea Bowers impegnata anche nell’emancipazione della donna.
