Cirio uses art to create participatory
models designed to redistribute knowledge and subject it to a
process of collective critical awareness. He calls this practice
“Regulation Art”, i.e. a form of art that aims to produce, through
democratic regulation methods, actions of real change in
contrast to the deregulation that neoliberalism typically
enforces. His works take the form of installations, lectures,
artifacts, photos, videos and public art interventions, online
and offline.

SOCIALITY (2018)

Sociality is a large composition of posters on a wall. In order to inform the public about how
these technologies work, Cirio decided to make the patents
available on the Sociality.today website, after assessing and
grouping them into the following categories: discrimination,
bias, addiction, deception, and surveillance. Users can
interact with the website’s interface proactively: they can
search and view patents, flag them, ban them, or add new
ones. Thus, Cirio delivers a twofold critique: on the one
hand, he reveals how these algorithms and devices work,
showing that the negative consequences of their use must
be attributed to the intentions of those who developed them
and not to a “black box” that is beyond human control; on the
other hand, he overturns the legal mechanisms designed to
protect intellectual property, by transforming them into a tool
for ethical control in the hands of the community of users.
To create the posters showcased in the exhibition, the artist
combined the names of the patents collected on the website
with images of their respective flowcharts.

_____________________

Eva e Franco Mattes

BIOGRAFIA / BIOGRAPHY

Renowned as pioneers of Net Art, Italian artists Eva and Franco
Mattes (1976) form a duo based in Brescia and New York.
Their career began in the 1990s when, under the pseudonym
0100101110101101.org, they took an interest in the spread of the
Internet and in the effects that hyper-connection produces
on daily life and on the human dimension. Interested in the
phenomena that characterize Network Society, Eva and
Franco Mattes explore what happens when we entrust our
memory to computers to store data online, how the web has
changed the boundaries between public and private spaces,
and how the ease of content reproduction on the Internet has
further challenged traditional categories like authorship and
authenticity. Their aesthetics appropriates images and stylistic
features that are immediately associated with the web: memes,
programming codes, websites, avatars, amateur photos and
videos. Their practice plays with this sign system to bring out the
contradictions underlying the functioning and use of the Internet.

THE BOOTS (2020)

The Bots is an installation built with three office desks, each one
with a screen mounted on the back. The screens show videos
of people putting on make-up, alternating beauty advice and
stories from their work life. The latter focus on the tasks they
carry out at a Facebook content moderation center in Berlin, and
the desks used are by the same brand as the ones used in those
offices. The installation is inspired by videos that have gone viral
on social media, which exploit the make-up tutorial format to
bypass censorship and spread protest information. This was the
tactic exploited, for example, by activist Feroza Aziz: in her TikTok
videos – which were later censored by the platform – she spoke
out about the violence perpetrated against Uyghur Muslims in
Xinjiang, a region in China. To make The Bots, the Mattes duo
collaborated with journalist Adrian Chen for one year, interviewing
workers and then asking actors and actresses to stage the
interviews to ensure the anonymity of those involved. While
many believe that posts by users on social media are viewed
by software and classified automatically, the task is actually
also performed by real people, who are constantly subjected to
sensitive images. For the artists, the idea of make-up is somewhat
akin to content moderation on digital platforms: in both cases,
the goal is to beautify the surface to hide something that is
undesirable.

________________

Brent Watanabe

BIOGRAFIA / BIOGRAPHY

Brent Watanabe (1970) is an American artist who lives and
works in Seattle.
