“The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Concept and realization of a medieval Masterpiece “(ETS, Pisa 2014) and explains, with agility and scientific rigor, the birth of this medieval architectural masterpiece taking into account the most recent and advanced studies.

And in order to put the tiles in order, there are no surprises, for example that the project came to provide a small dome or that the plant, based on the number 15, as well as being a unique example of medieval European architecture, is linked to the Christian symbolism of cult of the Virgin.

“I was able to ascertain – explained Valerio Ascani – the presence of a geometric base linked to flat figures such as the equilateral triangle and the pentagon and I identified the compositional process that led, through rotation on the vertices of the two overlapping figures, to generate the plant of the monument, which appears individually based on the number 15.

Of this peculiarity we have researched the possible reasons, in terms above all of Christian symbolism, reaching to offer some plausible solutions, reflected in schemes elaborated with the collaboration of PhDs of the University of Palermo and with the Graphic Laboratory of our department.

The choice of geometry linked to number 15 and its multiples had to originate from the desire to allude to the Marian dedication of the nearby cathedral, which the bell tower was going to complete, since in the theology and the iconography of the Virgin various elements refer to that number “.

As for the cylindrical structure of the Tower – explains the book – it refers to the type of lighthouses and coastal watch towers that in the same period, the second half of the twelfth century, the Pisan Republic was building on the coast, even if, of course, the key is spiritual and religious in this case. The Tower in fact represented a visual and sound reference for the faithful and pilgrims, who were thus directed towards the rites that took place in the cathedral, a theory confirmed by the analysis of the iconography of the reliefs and capitals of the bell tower.

Reinterpreting the preserved documentation and comparing the data with the analysis of the walls, the volume of Ascani also proposes a new chronological lineup on the approximately 180 years of the monument’s construction history.

“After the foundation in 1173 – concludes the researcher of Pisa University – there was a first stop of work around 1185, at the level of the third order of loggias, which was then slowly completed in the decades around 1200, until the most decisive recovery of the works with the three upper rings of loggias starting from the 1960s to end with the summit terrace attributed to Giovanni Pisano and started in 1299.

The top of the bell tower with the ‘telescope’ cell was then made in two distinct phases, contrary to what has been hitherto supported, of which the signs of joint and overlaps remain evident.

In the first and second quarters of the fourteenth century respectively, these phases are attributed to the workers trained at the school of Giovanni Pisano, the second to the workshop of the sons of Andrea Pisano, who must have done around or just after the middle of the fourteenth century the summit crowning, changing a previous project that included a small dome whose setting is still evident, and thus delivering to the posterity the Tower as in substance we can still see it today “.

La Torre pendente di Pisa nasconde una interessante storia E’ quasi un paradosso: la Torre di Pisa è uno dei monumenti più celebri al mondo,

[7,9411,64,4
4510,15295,4512,4511,4513
