Arte a Milano –  Victor Hugo Was Here 1° ottobre opening

Victor Hugo Was Here

____________________________________________

The title of the exhibition Victor Hugo Was Hererecalls a 19thcentury graffito found in Luxor, Egypt, in which French writer Victor Hugo engraved his name on the wall of an ancient temple, in order to presumably eternalize that he was once upon a time here in this place.

The artworks shown at the gallery have been realized by Jean-Baptiste Maitre e Dina Danish during two recidencies in Italy: in 2018 in the space of Sandra Natali in Bologna, connected to the program of MAMbo, and in 2019 at the American Academy in Rome.
The synergy between the two artists develops a common working method that combines themes and languages used in their artistic practices, giving rise to a series of works, with surfaces of various nature, that re-appropriate and elaborate expressive forms acquired from different histories and cultural traditions. In the two floors of the gallery we visually witness a process of “tearing” a layer of architecture and time, which are placed into our present and delivered to that eternity to which they seem to aspire from the beginning. The embroideries on voile, inspired by ancient graffiti and scribbles, decontextualize the semplicity and spontaneity of the original messages, while the engravings on linoleum and velve tell the context of Rome and its casual layering of time, creating a matrix of colliding imagery.
